Teaching
As a sociology teacher, I have three objectives. First, to center students’ own knowledge and diverse experiences and biographies. Second, to forge connections between lived experiences and sociological knowledge. Third, to cultivate critical thinking that allows students to understand challenging concepts and to critique them in ways that help them to better understand social problems and find solutions to them. These three objectives lay at the center of what I believe is effective teaching: de-centering knowledge, accentuating the relevance of sociology for understanding the changing world, and cultivating critical thinking skills useful beyond the classroom and throughout students’ lives.
